Culture

In the admissions essay I submitted to the University of Alabama, I wrote about my experiences exploring my own culture and how that has led me to pursue my future career path. I have included a few quotes below that I believe truly reflect my goals in life.

"Something sparked within me to want to learn more about my culture and share my experiences. I feel the need to explore my culture and no longer live according to someone else’s reality simply because we share a skin color. "

"My grandmother didn’t care what she was labeled as when she immigrated here as long as she got to stay. My parents are actively breaking down the stereotypes associated with Afro-Caribbean immigrants being loud, aggressive, party animals who only know how to say “Yah man.” And, I am building a future that includes every aspect of my own identity and appreciates my culture."

"As Russel Ledet tweeted, “We are our ancestors’ wildest dreams,” and I will continue to work hard and fight for the preservation of their culture. When I am in touch with my culture, I feel as if I can better represent those who came before me."
