An examination of the gut-wrenching novel by Jesmyn Ward that grapples with the realities of those who have no choice but to live bound to the past. With the mixing of the past and present, a reader can only be pulled into the storyline of the novel and experience the pains of ignorance, racism, and drug abuse alongside its characters. The universally recognized book, Sing, Unburied, Sing is a reminder of the lasting effects of the dark parts of this country's history.
In efforts to shed light on the unsung heroes of the University of Alabama, Dr. Hilary N. Green, PhD created the Hallow Grounds walking tour for the campus. With physical and digital markers, students and visitors are able to learn about the enslaved persons that had an integral part in the foundations of the University. The tour can be done alone or with a group, chronologically or spontaneously, but is overall meant for the remembrance of those who were enslaved for the growth this institution.
Over the next two and a half years, I plan to maintain my academic success, join various communities, and build a future that I can be proud of. I will be graduating Fall 2025, so I have provided my schedule and a detailed scholarship plan for the rest of my time here at UA. I do plan to attend graduate school at the University of Alabama, so preparing for that and my career in education after is a top priority.
