My first year of college was nothing short of exceptional. I came in with 24 credits and changed my major from Political Science to Elementary Education. I am so excited to pursue this new path and share all that I have learned with others. Even though I grew up in the same town for the majority of my life, I credit my experiences as a Girl Scout for preparing me to transition smoothly into independent life. I was able to focus on my academics and adjusting to this new place all while making friends, navigating roommates, and joining organizations.

I was awarded an Academic Distinction Award by the Black Faculty and Staff Association for my GPA in my first semester, and I have recently applied to be an Ambassador for the organization. By joining this organization, I will build lasting relationships with not only my peers, but faculty and staff that have done exceptional work. I will also be able to assisst future students in making their decision to attend the University of Alabama by exposing them to the diversity present on our campus.

          BEF 362                     UH 205

After a few more pre-requisite classes in the Fall, I will begin my major specific classes in the University of Alabama College of Education in the Spring. I look most forward to my SPE 300 Survey of Special Accommodations class in which we will explore the characteristics of exceptional students. I am quite interested in the study of what contributes to these students' academic success.

I am currently a tutor with Reading Allies which means that twice a week I go to a Tuscaloosa elementary school and work through a reading/writing lesson with a struggling student. Even after just a few lessons, I noticed improvements in the students I work with, and it gave me the motivation to keep pursuing a path in childhood education. Organizations like these are open to all majors and can give any student a sense of purpose.

The summer before my third year, I plan to study abroad with the honors college and knock out my 200 & 300 level elective courses. Since the College of Education has a prescribed schedule for students, it will be difficult to fit other classes in, but I can work on certain credits during the summers and take electives wherever I can.

In my third year, community engagement will be a top priority. I plan to maintain my membership in the Women of Excellence service organization because I believe that it builds skills and characteristics that are necessary to be a successful professional. In the Fall, I will be taking CEE 492 Engaging Children and Families in the Early Childhood Classroom, and the advocacy skills learned from volunteering and being involved in a community should aid me in being an advocate for children and parents in education. Serving others helps to foster empathy in an individual, and I think it's a key to being a teacher that can make an impact.

Honors Capstone Experience

The fall semester of 2025, will be my last, and I will be an intern at a local elementary school. These internships serve as a transitionary period for College of Education students to become teachers. I assume that this last semester will be the most difficult as I will be going from full-time college life to full-time working adult life. I think the communities that I am apart of now and over the years will bring me great comfort, and I will be able to lean on friends during my last moments as an Alabama undergraduate student. I hope that as I look back on my time here at the Capstone, I am able to see tangible evidence pointing to the impact I've had.

After graduation, I am hoping to go straight to graduate school and pursue a Master's degree in Special Education with an emphasis in the gifted and talented. I think this degree will give me that skills I need to be a well-rounded Gifted Teacher and serve my future students well. After teaching for a few years, attending Law School to become an Education Law Attorney is a goal of mine to better aid families in receiving the services that they have been promised and deserve.
